From: R.G. Cole To: Bill Campbell Cc: Bonnie Mattson; Greg Misenar; Holly Plackett; Jim Robinson; Nancy McCormick; Sharon Dorning; Tom Paine Sent: 4/6/03 8:33 PM Subject: WLSP Bike Lanes As I told you Saturday, I met with a number of residents along WLSP. The group is going to try to meet with all council members. Here are some of their issues that we should try and address at the public meeting. I think some of their concerns are valid. Safety - even with the work on the driveways, it will be hard to see the bikes. They are concerned about collisions with the bike and they are very concerned about their liability. The road is not really in bad shape and does not need work at this time. They suggested doing some core samples. Redmond exempted the project from SEPA. I know that Redmond believes that it is exempt from SEPA because it's just a maintenance project. Their point is that we're added four feet of impervious surface and that it's not just a maintenance project. The extra four feet of impervious surface will cause more storm water run off which will impact their Lake Sammamish and their property. The current roadway slopes to the west so there is little runoff to the east. The new project will have the road crowned at the center line which will cause significant amounts of runoff to the Lake. They are concerned about the impact of mail delivery and garbage pick up when the bike lanes will be blocked. The dangerous walkway from southbound WLSP turning onto 180th. Why spend all the money to create a bike lane for such a short distance. The focus of the project ought to be the protection of people walking along the west side and the crossing of WLSP at 24th, 180th and at Idlewood. Concerns about the safety of bikers crossing from one side to another at 24th. Richard |
