The Existing Parkway is UNSAFE, fix it!
Chandler Pickering, a beloved Redmond resident, parks commission member, and advocate was struck by a car and killed on West Lake Sammamish Parkway across from Idylwood Park while retrieving his mail. Studies show that WLSP is far and away the most dangerous road to bicycle on in the country, primarily because cyclists often ride against traffic. The City of Redmond will not designate the parkway as a two-way shared-use path because it does not meet any federal or local design guidelines. Despite all this, a vocal minority of waterfront property owners have tried to make the case that the existing 10' lane is sufficient for two-way travel of bicycles and pedestrians. Many accidents, especially bike/bike and bike/ped, go unreported because there is no insurance claim to be made or other incentives to file a report. Please relate your accidents, close calls, and how WLSP is a deterrent to riding or walking on the parkway in lieu of driving. These will be presented to council, but please also send them email separately.
